The Hyena Feeding Experience

A highlight of any Harar visit is the nightly hyena feeding ritual at the city outskirts.

For generations, the "hyena men" of Harar have fed wild hyenas by hand, a unique tradition that symbolizes the peaceful coexistence between humans and wildlife in this ancient city.

  • Witness up close as hyenas are called by name
  • Learn about their ecological importance
  • Optional opportunity to feed them yourself

Completely safe with experienced handlers. Flash photography not allowed.

Cultural Considerations

Harar is a conservative Islamic city with unique cultural norms. Our guides will help you navigate these respectfully:

  • Dress modestly (shoulders and knees covered, especially for mosque visits)
  • Ask permission before photographing people
  • Remove shoes before entering homes and mosques
  • Public displays of affection are frowned upon
  • Friday is the holy day - some sites may have limited access

The Harari people are famously hospitable and proud to share their culture with respectful visitors. Learning a few words of Harari (like "nagaa" for hello) will be greatly appreciated.

"The most culturally rich experience of our Ethiopia trip. Our guide arranged for us to join a family for coffee ceremony - such a privilege. The alleyways of the old town are magical at sunset. The hyena feeding was exciting but the real highlight was the warmth of the Harari people."
